The lettuce was OK

I recently had occasion to purchase hamburgers from one of the international franchises operating in Kaitaia.

Now I'm not claiming to be an expert on the subject, but my brother Monty and I launched the first hamburger sales in Kaitaia in the 1960s, and I have spent most of my working life of 58 years allied to aspects of food supply.

These 'hamburgers' we tried to eat deserve the following comments.

The meat patties, while large, were of a rubbery texture. They were dry and lacking in flavour.

The buns were of a reasonable quality, but were not toasted.

There was no onion that I could discern. An egg on the egg burger was a flat, rubbery object that I mistook at first for a slab of pita bread, and had no egg flavour whatsoever.

The tomato was a fair slice but quite hard-probably not the company's fault, but a seasonal problem.

The slice of beetroot was again rubbery. A poor-quality product.

The lettuce was OK.

There was no tomato sauce on the burger.

Is it any wonder that Asian food is gaining in popularity?

PS: The dog loved it, but then he is a Labrador!
