Umbrage taken

I am one of the campers in the photo in the January 23 edition of the Northland Age. I take umbrage at the report and some of the facts therein stated.

Firstly, the end of the reserve is DOC land, and according to the DOC ranger that visited free camper van parking is allowed as long as you have a self-containment certificate.

As for 300 people camping there at one time this is indeed a grossly exaggerated statement. At one time, I saw at least 10 tents on the council reserve, and believe they were approached to move on and were still there regardless. These would be the people using the council toilets, and the ones who leave their rubbish behind, not us responsible motor homers who pack in, pack out.
