I am an absolute animal lover, SPCA, SAFE, member, and have recently become vegan since I found out what the dairy industry does to animals. So why am I seemingly the only person who understands that feral cats are a problem just as much as possums and rats?
Why do I have to go to our local recycle centre and ask who is looking after the many rheumy-eyed, skinny cats scratching out a living in between avoiding being crushed by the rubbish? I've rung the SPCA, and I'm sorry folks, but those good people are ceiling high with our unwanted kittens.
I've approached the business that runs the recycling, but, No it's not our responsibility and we don't want to upset the public, they say.
I've approached the local council but no it's not our problem, or DOC's, or anyone's.
I got permission to catch and humanely kill some of those poor animals. I gave them warmth, clean water and good food for their last days and they went out fast, but it took its toll on me and the workers at the tip treated me like I was being a pain in the a%. Now I see they've got eight more sick-looking kittens there.
I watched Campbell Live last night, and there were animal lovers saying cat catchers are cruel, but I don't see them being able to house all the feral cats in our neighbourhood because, bottom line, they couldn't even house one-eighth of them.
People. Get real. Do what needs to be done kindly and with care, and organisations, take responsibility for what's around you.
