Spare the clock
Kaitaia's (and the Real Far North's) town clock should be restored immediately!
Having been part of the research into this distinctive landmark, and having vivid memories of the members of Rotary Kaitaia who donated it to the people of the district, I have been amazed at the apathy and attitude of locals who would want to eliminate a work of art which has been sadly neglected, over many years, by the current care giver and former care giver (not the Rotary Club, but local body.)
This clock is a focal point, and if in working order would benefit locals and visitors as it previously did. When it was erected in the 1960s it created interest and great debate by old and young - the latter full of enthusiasm for something different and useful. You see, someone looked outside of the square (to a triangular prism - pun).
Oh yes! Do look at Rotary Kaitaia's other gift to the town, now looking sadly neglected too - the Rotary Wheel and water fountain adjoining the community centre, an engineering feat all done by local Rotarians.
