Kaitaia businessman John Stewart says he has an idea that would save lives, and paint.
Rather than a continuous fog line on the edge of sealed roads, he suggested a series of arrows, which would remind drivers which side of the road to stay on.
"People have long been saying that we need arrows on roads to remind tourists to keep left, and some have been painted, but they are few and far between. New fog lines would be a constant reminder."
He accepted that his idea could not be patented, but the machine that would be used to paint the arrows could be, and he had a cost-effective idea there too.
"If councils or the government can't work out how to do it, I could fill my boat with white paint, run a garden hose from the bung to the port side tyre, then use some No8 wire to fix an arrow-shaped gumboot to the tyre," he said, only slightly tongue in cheek.
