The Kaeo under-13s got their pre-season winter campaign off to a great start by winning the Hora Hora Junior Rugby Sevens championship on Sunday.

The Kaeo boys played five games in one day, winning all including the event final against City by 21-7.

However, Wayne Lunjevich - who coached the Kaeo side alongside Will Whyte - felt the eventual margin of the scoreline in the final was a tad deceiving as both sides had gone into half-time deadlocked at 7-all.

"Through determination and fitness, Kaeo dominated the second half and were crowned winners," said Lunjevich, noting the Far North side had dominated the tournament with a for/ against points differential of 170/14.

Layken Tua was Kaeo's man of the match in the final, while teammate Te Kauri Parkinson was presented with the player of the tournament award by the Hora Hora event's organising committee.

Lunjevich noted Kaeo had welcomed the opportunity to participate for the first time in the one-day sevens tournament which was established by the Hora Hora RFC last year for Year 7/8 boys aged under 13 and weighting under 60kg .

"Boys started training early this year, putting in a lot of hard work," said Lunjevich, adding thanks to the sponsoring business as well as the parents and supporters for backing the campaign.

Elsewhere, Kaeo J&T rugby invited all past, present and intending players to attend weigh-in/ registration at Waikoura Domain this Saturday from 10am-1pm.
