The 30 senior members of the 90 Mile Beach Surfcasting Club participating in the Riders Sports Store/Rogers Motors-sponsored field day were happy to see 13 junior club members alongside them catching fish last week.

The life blood of any club comes from the participation of juniors so the older fishos had particular praise for two youngsters from one family who reeled in impressive fish any senior club member would be glad to catch.

Fishing over a 2.8 metre, 2pm high tide, Cruise Cameron - the club's junior champ last year - caught a 2.13kg kahawai to take out seventh place on the field day prize list and his sister Denise Cameron weighed a 1.8 kg and 1.18kg kahawai to take ninth place.

Their cousin Wikitoria Rogers also weighed in a 1.38kg kahawai.

Fishing conditions were nearly perfect for the field day with less than a metre swell and no wind. With clear skies, looking for deep water was the key to fishing over a small high tide.

There was not a lot of fish caught and not many snapper. The most prominent fish hooked were kahawai, the heaviest a 2.68kg specimen reeled in by Bo Cameron.

Jack Rogers won the field day first prize with a 2.60kg snapper, the heaviest of that species landed.

Dave Hallett took second place with the heaviest trevally, weighing 2.72kg, while the 2.68kg kahawai earned Bo Cameron third prize.

Peter Froggart from Dargaville was fourth with a 2.48kg snapper, and visitor Rocky Manihera took fifth prize with his 2.15kg kahawai.

Sixth prize went to Milton Arnold with a 1.78kg snapper, Cruise Cameron hooked the seventh prize with his 2.13kg kahawai, Paul Summers was eighth with a 1.67kg snapper, Denise Cameron was ninth with her 1.83kg kahawai and Steve Maisey landed 10th prize with a 1.48kg snapper.

The haggle of 2.5 kg trevally went to Dave Hallett weighing in a 2.72 kg trevally and the winner of the Riders Sports Stores Mystery weight snapper of 1.50kg went to Milton Arnold with a 1.51kg fish.

Milton Arnold was also the most active angler, weighing in angler snapper, with Dave Hallett hard on his heels with one snapper and the only two trevally caught. Denise Cameron being the only female to make the prize pool.

The next field day is the Workman Tankard 24-hour fishing a 2.6m, 7.30pm evening high tide from 12pm on Saturday, January 31 to 12pm on Sunday, February 1.

The weigh-in at the caravan at 12pm on February 1, will be followed by prizegiving.

Anyone interested in joining the club can contact Jack Rogers on 09 408 2660 during business hours.
