In its return following a lengthy absence from secondary school hockey competition , the Kaitaia College 1st XI hockey team proved competitive at an afternoon tournament in Kaikohe in early May.
Standouts included Nabeel Janiff, Katiya Clyde and Beverly Thompson, along with goalie Tegan O'Callaghan, who not only played all of Kaitaia's games but a couple for other teams as well.
College sports co-ordinator Juice Brown noted this was the first time hockey had been played at the school in "ages", and put much of the credit for that down to the efforts of former Black Stick Lizzy Horlock, for helping get the sport off the ground last year.
With other overwhelming commitments Horlock has since stepped down and been replaced by new staff member, Jerym Walker.
