It's been a year in the making and now Sharon Sanderson of Kerikeri has the certificate to show she is the only Master Colour Consultant for Wella in a region that covers a fairly wide area - everywhere north of Auckland.

She was hand-picked by the company to complete the certification process which was introduced to the United Kingdom a few years ago and has been running in Australia for the last two years. It required her to travel every month to Auckland to study and the comprehensive course covers not just hair colouring but a broad spectrum of other aspects of the beauty industry.

It's like getting a degree, she says. It's an international recognition and it's the first time it has been run in New Zealand. It covers everything from colour application, the science of hair colour, the psychology of appearance change and how certain colours suit certain types of skin tone and what a change of style will mean.

She is now passing that knowledge on to the four full-time staff who work in her salon in the Village Mall in Kerikeri and which she has owned for the past 13 years. She says being a certified Master Colour consultant engenders professional confidence in the staff and ensures the team is up-to-date with international trends.

This industry changes so quickly and it has been good for us to look at our portfolio of products and to fine-tune those to suit our clients' needs.

Although her home town is Warkworth Sharon lived overseas for many years. She came back to New Zealand and settled in Auckland for a couple of years before deciding that it wasn't where she wanted to be - hence the decision to happily move northwards to the Bay of Islands.
