Far North possums were handed a brief reprieve last week, due to a gloomy weather forecast, but only until this weekend.
The Fairburn/Kaiaka Hall committee decided to postpone its Grand Possum Cull 2017 for a week, chairman Peter Niepel saying hunting the pests in a storm wasn't much fun.
The hunt will now start on Friday night, with the weigh-in at the hall from noon on Sunday followed by the prizegiving at 2pm. Tickets, $10 per person, are available at Rider's Sports Depot in Kaitaia, while barbecued food, soup and drinks will be on sale at the weigh-in on Sunday
Spot prizes, including $100 cash, will be won, along with prizes in the categories of most possums, heaviest, furriest and most unusual, for adults and children under 14 years.
The possums (which the committee asks be kept cool after killing) will be machine-plucked at the hall, with the fur going to the committee. Every dead possum will be gratefully accepted, except road kill, which will be disqualified.
