BIG WHEEL: Kiwi Keith Wilson (shown here driving in the 2014 Queen's Birthday Weekend meet) will again be a leading contender in the super saloon grade at the Percy Poharama Memorial this weekend.

BIG WHEEL: Kiwi Keith Wilson (shown here driving in the 2014 Queen's Birthday Weekend meet) will again be a leading contender in the super saloon grade at the Percy Poharama Memorial this weekend.

The above heading is the message for local motorheads from organisers of the Percy Poharama Memorial Queen's Birthday Weekend Meet at Taipa Speedway this coming weekend.

In her preview of the two-day event, Age motorsport commentator Carole Teixeira noted strong numbers had already registered across all grades including saloons, super saloons, B-grade, production, C-grade, ATVs, TQs, midgets, six-shooters, the demo teams event, ministocks, and open wheel classes.

The main event will be the Placemakers $1000 Saloon Showdown which is expected to be hotly contested, with Taipa's Roy 'Inchman' Walker, Kyran Van Iperen, and Ray 'He Who Dares' Dare taking on allcomers from down country such as Tom Roberts, Scott Landsdowne, Jesse Low, Tom Allen, Phil Mainland, and more.

Consecutive two-time winner of the production saloons, the Coulston Memorial Trophy, Paul Joyce will also return to defend this title once again with his RB30 powered Nissan Skyline, Teixeira noted, and wondering if Taipa's DeWaal Hondas, or Rotorua's Dion Heron, had the nous to knock Joyce off his pedestal.

Other highlights expected will see the open wheel grades which always come to Taipa for this end-of-season finale returning in great numbers, while midgets, TQs, and six-shooters will all be out there to entertain over the weekend.

Elsewhere, super saloon maestro, Shane 'Macca' McInteer, together with 'Kiwi' Keith Wilson, will be powering their mega horsepower super saloons around the track, along with Kaikohe's Max and Shirley Andresen and Kerikeri veteran Ray Jordan among others.

Noting a number of other local businesses have jumped on board to sponsors the annual event to make it a more memorable one, Teixeira extended an open invitation to the wider Far North community to check out the annual speedway extravaganza.

"This will be a spectacular event not to be missed so get your backsides trackside over the weekend," she said.
