RECOGNISE IT? The shirt that a burglar left behind as he fled his victims address. PICTURE/NZ POLICE

Police are keen to hear from anyone who recognises the shirt left behind by a burglar as he fled from an address in Kaitaia in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The offender entered the property in Te Reinga Street at about 1.20am, Sergeant Kevin Anderson said, breaking into a van parked in the driveway. He stole a GPS and a charger, and also entered a shed on the property, taking a backpack. He was seen by the victim as he was about to enter the garage, and was chased off the property, leaving behind the shirt he had used to wrap the GPS and charger.

"Someone may recognise the shirt and be able to provide details of the offender," Sergeant Anderson added.

"He may have been at the Kauri Arms, which had not long closed and is a short distance away."

Any information should go to Sergeant Anderson at the Kaitaia police station, phone (09) 408-6500.
