Spring is here! Winter is over and summer isn't too far away so it's time to get the boat out and get sorted. It's amazing that with boats things seem to break on them when you're not even using them but they certainly need regular use to stay in tip top condition. As you drift out from the boat ramp you don't want to suddenly discover you have flat batteries or the trim oil on your engine tilt is low.

If you're not confident with basic engine or boat maintenance seek help and there are some great places in the Bay of Islands that can do exactly that. I run two trailer boats as part of my business and I certainly value the advice and skill of these local operators. It's worth the investment because they have the backing of established manufacturers. Don't be fooled into relying on the proverbial fly-by-night backyard operator.

Before your first trip out after winter there are a few of the things to check:

1. Safety equipment

Check expiry dates and all gear in good order. Charge the batteries or replace them if necessary.

2. Fire extinguishers

Have they been checked in the last year, and are they easy to access?

3. Fuel system

Make sure the fuels lines and clamps connections are in good condition and that the filters have been changed.

4. General check

Is your anchor and chain in good condition? Check that the shackles are tight and wired up. Check the bilge pump works and has good flow. Are your anodes in good condition? If they show no wear they may not be earthed properly. If you have any skin fittings are they in good condition? Are the hoses attached to them in good condition? And are the hose clamps corrosion free? Have a walk around your boat and make sure it is sea worthy.

Don't forget your trailer, if it's been sitting in one place all winter, it may need some love as well!

These are a few of the basic things to check before the first trip of the summer season and for a comprehensive checklist visit www.discoverboating.co.nz

Safe boating and enjoy the water.
