Adrenaline junkies are dusting off their cowboy hats with the three Far North legs of the national summer rodeo circuit set to take place over three consecutive days in just over two weeks' time.
The local rodeo season begins with the Far North Rodeo at the Kaitaia A&P Showgrounds on Friday, January 2, followed by the Oruru Valley Rodeo at the Peria Saleyards on Saturday, January 3, and the Wild Out West, a second division rodeo, at Umawera on Sunday, January 4.
Local riders feature strongly in the field of the best cowboys and cowgirls in the land who have already begun vying for cash prizes and valuable points on the 2014/15 series and a quest to lock down national titles in bull ride, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, rope and tie and barrel racing divisions among others.
Previewing the triple bill of action was local rodeo stalwart Rachelle O'Callaghan, who reminded that the Oruru Valley Rodeo Club will once again be running its annual Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign to continue its support of the work done by the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.
"There is pink everywhere, the cowboys and cowgirls are dressed in pink and sometimes so are the horses," she said, adding the OVRC committee was hoping to see the community come out in force to support the event.
