The best of Kaitaia's businesses were feted last week when the Kaitaia Business Association presented the town's inaugural awards.

The contenders were nominated by their customers and the outcome was decided by public voting, with the following results.

'Get it Right' (best-performing business in customer service): joint winners - Rod Knight Automotive, McCoy and Thomas Hunting and Fishing. Highly commended - Shackleton's Amcal Chemist. The other nominees - Te Ahu, Kaitaia Library, Paper Plus, Stonecraft Construction, Pak'nSave, BNZ, Bubba's Baby Store.

'Golden Broom' (best-presented premises): winner - Te Ahu. Highly commended - Folders. The other nominees - Shackleton's Amcal Chemist, McCoy and Thomas Hunting and Fishing, Knight's the Jewellers, Paper Plus, Bubba's Baby Store, Farmers, Stonecraft Construction.

'Tane Mahuta' (the most effective green or environmentally-friendly business) in Kaitaia: winner - Community Business and Environment Centre (CBEC).

Highly commended - Rider's Sports Depot. The other nominees - Department of Conservation, McCoy and Thomas Hunting and Fishing, Kaitaia Library.

Koru Award (best new business): winner - Bubba's Baby Store. Highly commended - Carter's Tyres. The other nominees - 100 per cent, Te Ahu, Combined Hireage, Mainstreet Lodge, Far North Indian.

The Minty Award (funniest experience with a local business): winner - Bryce Quarry. Highly commended - McCoy and Thomas Hunting and Fishing.
