Name: Michael Cate. School:
Whangarei Boys' High School.
Age: 16. Height: 189cm. Weight:
76kg. Representative honours:
Represented New Zealand at four
World Championships.
My sport is sailing.
I first realised I had some talent
when I placed third in my age
group at Optimist Nationals in
2004.
My long term sporting goal is to
go as far as I can in sailing, what
ever form of sailing it may be.
The biggest thing I have learned
about training is practice makes
perfect and quality
not quantity.
The worst injury I
have ever had is a
dislocated kneecap.
If it wasn't for living
on the Whangarei
Harbour, I don't think
I would have ever
wanted to learn to
sail.
The best sporting
advice ever given to
me was ``sail hard or go home''
from NZ team coach John Morgan.
The sportsperson I most admire
is Dean Barker because he wasn't
the most successful dinghy sailor
in his early days until he won the
1990 Volvo ISAF Youth Worlds in
the Laser. He has gone from
strength to strength with his career
in various types of sailing.
The biggest challenge I have
overcome was not having a
coach.
I think the secret to my success
is going to be hard work and
determination.
My proudest sporting moment
so far has been placing fourth at
the Splash Class World Champion
ships in 2010, 1st Splash Class
National Championships 2010,
1st Splash Class North Island
Championships
2008 & 2009.
I'd just like to thank my parents,
Onerahi Yacht Club, Whangarei
Boys High School Old Boys Assoc
iation, Kensington Fitness Centre, Onerahi Lions.
When I finish school I am going
to hopefully race in Europe pro
fessionally.
Finally, why should you remember my name? Because it's not
the last time you will hear it.
Because in a few years I am
going to be: You will have to wait
and see!
