OOPS: Rush-hour commuters heading home on Whangarei's Riverside Drive were surprised to spot a police car nestled in the mud and mangroves yesterday.
The car appeared to have left the road near the Mackesy Rd turnoff around 5.30pm, gouging tracks in the grass before plunging backwards onto the mudflats.
It had been raining heavily shortly before the crash. The driver, a female police officer, is believed to have been shaken but unhurt. The tide was out at the time.
Whangarei Sergeant Andrew Priest said police would be taking a closer look at the circumstances of the accident today.
No other car was involved. The Serious Crash Unit was called in because a police car was involved.
