Yesterday's match between Central Districts and Northern Districts had statisticians thumbing frantically
through their Cricket Almanacs, but the record that mattered most to ND skipper James Marshall was seeing his side leading the Plunket Shield competition with maximum points.
Marshall said the side have been poor starters in the past but they now have the luxury of the pack chasing them, after they wrapped up their second four-day match inside three days, after a similar first-round victory over Otago last week.
"What impresses me about this week was that a different bunch of guys stepped up from the last game and that's the sign of a good side, we need different individuals to step up at various stages during the season if we want to continue our success," Marshall said.
Wicketkeeper Peter McGlashan will be the individual who will be perhaps be best remembered from the Cobham Oval encounter after he broke the world record for catches in a match by taking his 12th yesterday, claiming Bevan Griggs' wicket off the bowling of Graeme Aldridge.
"To get so many catches off a wicket like that, with so few going to the slips, is quite remarkable and something he'll remember for the rest of his life," the captain said.
The former CD player may have claimed more wickets in the second innings but the visitors refused to play ball and continued their fightback yesterday forcing Marshall to try out some slower bowling options.
A 137-run partnership between Ross Taylor and Matthew Sinclair on Wednesday started CD's revival. Sinclair started yesterday on 85 but only scored eight more runs before he joined Griggs back in the pavilion, caught at first slip by Michael Parlane off Trent Boult's bowling.
"They fought back well but you've got to ride out those tough periods in the game and not panic and we did that well," Marshall said.
Sinclair's wicket signalled the beginning of the end for CD and although the tail wagged gamely, including an impressive 60 by Doug Bracewell and a quickfire 36 by Euan Thompson, it was never going to be enough to threaten ND's maximum points.
Central were finally dismissed just before lunch for 310, leaving ND just 126 to score for the win.
Parlane and Brad Wilson settled any nerves Marshall may have been feeling with a solid start, scoring 57 before Wilson perished, leaving Parlane to steer the side home for a nine-wicket victory with an unbeaten 66.
The other outstanding individual performance in the match came from Aldridge, who took a five-wicket bag in each innings, ending with 11/146, making it the best bowling performance of all time against CD - surpassing DB Clarke's 10/78 record set in Whangarei in the 1967/68 season.
Coach Grant Bradburn was understandably thrilled to see his side accomplish their second outright win in as many matches.
"We've started this season in top gear but it's only two games and we haven't won the Plunket Shield yet, but certainly it's very pleasing from our point of view the way the guys are playing," Bradburn said.
The whole squad and staff deserved a pat on the back, he said, particularly Jason Weedon, the conditioning coach, for the shape the side have achieved physically during the build-up to competition.
He said the difference in the fielding between the two teams had been conspicuous during the match, a fact he put directly down to their hard work and fitness work in pre-season training.
Bradburn is hopeful of having a couple of Northern's team named in the Black Caps for the upcoming test series with Pakistan - it will certainly give him less of a headache when it comes to naming the team to take on Wellington at Seddon Park in Hamilton next Tuesday.
"We've now got guys on the fringes who are ready to step into this team but at the moment it is very hard to leave guys out, so selection becomes a difficult process," he said.
Jono Boult was one new player who took his chance this week. He top-scored in the first innings with 76 and then took a wicket with his right-arm off spin in only his second first class match.
He was another of the great performances that the ND players produced this week.
"It's been brilliant to put so many performances on the honours board after just two games, and for Pete to have a world record under his belt is tremendous but also Graeme Aldridge's success is good reward for the effort he's put in over the winter."
