Ruakaka trainer Ricky Wells has had his share of joy and disappointment in racing.
A keen horseman, Wells hunted for many years and at one time traded some of his hunting and farming days off for the odd weekly game of polo. A lifelong ambition to own and train a racehorse came to fruition when the opportunity arose to purchase by auction the yearling filly Fashion Star.
The winner of three races, Fashion Star has over the years produced nine foals for Wells at his Waipu property. Four of these were retained by the Wells family and all raced with the most notable being Double Ar Be who was seldom out of the money and was also stakes placed in Australia before being retired.
These days Wells has a couple of younger prospects all from his fabulous old mare Fashion Star who although is now retired from broodmare duties, remains on the property at the grand age of 27.
Wells' son Andrew is an avid racegoer and wife Lorraine is a keen supporter of the local club.
At Ruakaka tomorrow it won't be one of Fashion Star's progeny that they will be cheering from the sidelines.
Govind, a horse that Wells trains and races in a syndicate with Alan Waldron and others, will try to repeat his last start success on the course in the Northland Copiers Services 1000m sprint.
The 5-year-old bay gelding had been out of form since the end of winter last year. but time in the spelling paddocks must have worked a treat as he won convincingly on his first day back.
"He is back, the horse is back," a delighted Wells said.
The first race tomorrow starts at 11.32am.
Winners flow for Wells family
