Whangarei Boxing Gym's annual tournament at Hora Hora Rugby Club was a hit with 300 punters and competitors filling the clubrooms.
Boxers from Whangarei turned out along with those who had travelled from Auckland and Kaeo for Saturday's event, and 11 bouts were put on the card.
There were some thrilling fights for the spectators, with Whangarei's United Gym's Brad Day going up against Papatoetoe's Johnny Gose for the Snow Cochrane Championship Belt.
Day was too strong for his South Auckland opponent and took out the 69kg welterweight division on a majority points decision in what was the feature bout of the night.
Whangarei Boxing Gym trainer Tim Bowman said he only had one boxer fighting on Saturday, as he could not find matches for his other charges.
Jarrah Swann put on an excellent performance against Whangarei Academy boxer Cody Palmer and won the 69kg division bout on majority points decision.
Meanwhile, the Bowman trained Deanne Carpenter and Kaylah Munday went head to head in an exhibition match. The pair depart to Tahiti tomorrow.
The two 15-year-old Kamo High students are off to fight at a tournament on Saturday.
Carpenter will enter the ring fighting in the 64kg class, while Munday will line up in the 70kg weight division.
Carpenter and Munday were restricted to an exhibition match, as Bowman did not want to risk injury, he said.
Overall, Bowman was pleased with how the tournament played out, rating it a great success, with some exciting bouts, particularly from the large junior contingent who took part.
