Despite missing several key players, Whangarei Boys' High will throw all they have at the determined Maungakaramea outfit tomorrow in the second day of their two-day clash.
The school boys clawed their way back in the game last weekend at Maungakaramea Domain, with middle-order batsmen Jordan Antunovich and Bradley Kneebone pairing up to score their first premier grade half-century.
Antunovich went on to claim his first century. His 101 runs and Kneebone's 51 helped their side reach a creditable 276, after the opening batsmen were dismissed for single figures, with the exception of skipper Rory Darkins (26) and Henry Cooper (28).
"It was a great fightback," said Russell Smith, director of cricket at the high school.
"We picked up three wickets before stumps which was good, but we still have a fair way to go."
Maungakaramea start tomorrow on 83 for three, with opening batsman Dean Child returning to the crease, on 29 runs not out, and he will pair up with in-form batsman Finley Brooker as the side look for the first-innings lead.
"They are a strong side on paper, and we will be slightly handicapped as three of our first XI are away with the Northern Districts Under-17s in Gisborne - Henry (Cooper), Ben Hyde and bowler Tom Hermans," Smith said.
Vishaan Harypursat and Darkins will lead the way with the ball, while pacemen Cameron Johnson and Aiden Miller have been promoted from WBHS 2nd XI to bolster the side, while another youngster is still to be added to the mix.
Onerahi Central and WBHS have a decent lead, having earned triple points for the outright wins in round one. Because round two was virtually rained out, teams will be looking for strong performances tomorrow and in the remaining two rounds to catch the leaders.
Onerahi got off to an outstanding start in their two-dayer with Kamo at Kensington Park, ending day one on 287/4, on the back of a stellar bowling effort, ripping through Kamo's batting line-up for 95.
Kamo will have plenty of work to do to halt the side that has gathered momentum throughout the season.
At Cobham Oval, City will resume batting on 44/4 against a quick-fire Kaipara Flats bowling attack.
After racking up 268 all out in their first innings, bowler Mark Dellow claimed a hat-trick with the ball, snatching a trio of City's top-order batsmen, Chris Page, Ian Page and Bert Horner, in seven overs, while Chris Anderson was dismissed for 12 by Kevin Forde.
Two-day championship points as of January 10: Onerahi Central 21.86, WBHS 21.82, Kaipara Flats 13.48, City 8.63, Maungakaramea 8.14, Kamo 6.52.
