Manu "The Beast" Vatuvei didn't make it for a Warriors visit to Otangarei Primary School in Whangarei ahead of the team's preseason trial against Sunshine Coast at Toll Stadium today.

The Warriors split their school visiting squad and sent the big winger to Manaia Primary School with his team-mates Jacob Lillyman, James Maloney and Feleti Mateo,

But the youngsters at Otangarei Primary hardly noticed. They were too busy mobbing the Warriors' players who did turn up to see them - captain Simon Mannering, Elijah Taylor and Shaun Johnson.

Twenty-one-year-old Johnson, who is shaping up as a star halfback after his first NRL season last year, appeared to have the most admirers.

"What do you like about him?" the Advocate asked the young fans.

"He's like me - he just runs straight through with the ball," replied nine-year-old Tyree Paewhenua.

The Warriors were quizzed by the children, who were told the trio liked league because it involved hanging out with their friends and going to Australia fortnightly to play a game they enjoyed.

Later, the Warriors questioned the children on what they had been told, rewarding youngsters with correct answers with double tickets to the game this afternoon.

One of the questions was "What position does Manu Vatuvei play?" Six-year-old Ella Porter was first with the right answer, much to the delight of her mother Hune, who said she would be taking Ella along today to see the popular Pacific Islands player in action.

The Warriors won 30-nil when they played the Queensland Burleigh Bears at Toll Stadium last February, the first time the team had played in Whangarei since its foundation year, 1995.

The Warriors have several players out with injuries, but Mannering said today's team mixing young players with seasoned veterans expected to win.

The game will kick off at 5pm, with the Junior Warriors, who won the NRL's under-20 competition in the past two seasons, playing the Auckland Vulcans at 3pm.

Toll Stadium manager John Lynch said yesterday that ticket sales were ahead of the same stage of the Warriors' game last year, when 8200 tickets had been sold.

Gates will open at 2.30pm today. Admission costs $15 for adults and $10 for children in the grandstand and adults $10, children $5 on the terraces.
