Whangarei triathlete Sam Warriner and Aucklander Terenzo Bozzone completed a victorious New Zealand double at the Eagleman 70.3 half ironman in the United States yesterday.
The two took different paths to the podium at Cambridge, Maryland, with Bozzone finally passing leader Andrew Yoder, of the US, with about 8km remaining on the run after being down by almost four minutes at one point early on the bicycle leg.
In searing conditions, Bozzone pushed on to win in three hours 58 minutes 17 seconds, more than 1min clear of American James Cotter and Yoder.
Warriner left nothing to chance, the veteran Olympian winning the leading split for all three legs.
She led out of the swim by a handful of seconds from Australian multiple world champion Michellie Jones and extended that lead to more than 2min after the bike ride.
The only athletes able to stay in touching distance were second-placed Samantha McGlone, of the US, and Jones, as Warriner won in 4hr 20min 01sec. NZPA
