Northland were unlucky to miss out on the Junior Girls Development Quadrangular title, when they were pipped by Waikato at the Golf Northland hosted tournament.
Defending champions Northland and Waikatoeach had 16 points at the end of three rounds of handicap matchplay last week to lead the others in the tournament - Auckland and North Harbour.
However, Waikato took out the contest on countback.
It was an impressive performance from the young Northland team - led by 13-year-old No1 Jodi Macalister, supported by Brooke Kingi, Shanice Croft-Kemp, Soktaera Sean, Samantha Kruse and Soktaeraodh Sean.
"It's one of the youngest Northland girls teams to have contested this tournament, so they did well," Golf Northland development manager Bronwyn Winter noted.
Meanwhile, 15-year-old Northland golfer Kadin Neho, the 2010 Golf Northland Match Play Champion, put in a solid effort at the Lion Foundation New Zealand Amateur Championships at Christchurch's Russley Golf Club.
Neho was one of five Northland golfers contesting the amateurs. The Northland contingent included three of last years interprovincial team - current NZ Maori Match Play Champion Lee Neumann, Sean Masters the 2011 NZ Maori Match Play runner-up and Neho, along with Waipu's Thomas Neylon and The Pines Luke Brown.
Neho performed well over four rounds of strokeplay last week to make the first cut of 60 in a field of approximately 130 players, and then narrowly missed out on making the second cut of 32.
"It's quite an achievement for Kadin making the first cut among such a competitive field," Winter said. Masters was also unlucky to just miss out on making the first cut.
Neho and Masters now head to Te Awamutu where they will join 15 other Northland golfers for the NZ Maori Golf Association Under-19 Championships, which start tomorrow and end on Friday.
"We have high hopes of doing well at this tournament," a quietly confident Winter said.
