THE Bay of Islands College senior girls volleyball team defended its Northland Volleyball Classic title for the third consecutive year on Saturday and are now fundraising for the nationals in Palmerston North.
The school remains the strongest in the province in the sport and recently the team won all four of their matches in the Northland preliminary tournament.
At the Volleyball Classic on Saturday they beat Whangarei Girls High School 3-1 and recorded two 3-0 wins over Kamo and Tikipunga at the annual event hosted by the Kawakawa college.
Team-member Katherine Ruwhiu was named the tournament's outstanding player.
But now they are focusing on raising money to get to the national tournament in Palmerston North at the end of the month.
This weekend the girls are having a "Volleython Fundraiser" and will play non-stop volleyball for five hours.
The team are seeking sponsors from their communities to help defray the costs of competing in the competition.
They say any assistance would be greatly appreciated should they come knocking at the door.
