Northland athletes feeling the effects of an over-indulgent festive season are encouraged to try something new with the challenge of the Contact TriWoman series.
Fresh from winning the Port of Tauranga Half Ironman, Olympic triathlete Sam Warriner will be at the start and finish line to encourage and motivate budding talent from around the region.
"Having a TriWoman race in Whangarei is just fantastic and I can't wait to be there to support all the ladies taking part. This is what our sport is about, inspiring all of us to participate and reach our own goals," she said.
Women of all abilities are encouraged to enter the series - there is a variety of triathlon and duathlon events - designed for every woman in the community to set their own targets and achieve them.
"I'll be there to share in some of the joy as women of all backgrounds and abilities feel the thrill of the finish line, knowing they have worked hard and achieved something special on the day," Warriner said.
"I just love days like this, it is a chance for me to give something back and offer advice to anyone who asks."
The Marsden Pt event is one of 10 to be held throughout New Zealand this summer with the focus on Kiwi women participating, rather than racing.
Competitors can choose to take part in the triathlon, a 300m swim, 10km bike and a 3km walk/run or the duathlon, a 1.5 run/walk followed by a 10km bike and a 3km run/walk.
Based at Marsden Pt Beach, the course takes in Port Marsden Highway on the run and Marsden Bay Drive to One Tree Pt on the bike, with transition and race headquarters at Ralph Trimmer Rd, close to the beach.
The first event of the Contact TriWoman Series was held at Narrow Neck Beach in Auckland on Saturday, and Marsden Point is next on the agenda, followed by another eight events around the country. The series moves as far south as Christchurch.
The Marsden Pt event starts on Sunday at 9am. For information and to enter online go to www.tri.co.nz.
