Whangarei triathlete Lee Greer continues to add to his reputation on the national scene with a strong win in the Rotorua Triathlon over the weekend.
"It was a positive thing for me although it's still fairly early in the season there were a few good athletes there and it was quite a close race in the end," he said.
Greer won the event by about 30 seconds in a time of 59.10, but he put the win down to a strong run.
"There were a group of five guys who came off the bike just behind me and they weren't too far back so I had to run pretty hard to hold them off," he said.
The strain of holding off the bunch wasn't helped by not being fully recovered from an illness.
"But apart from that, everything felt pretty good and I'm looking forward to my main aim at the moment, which is the Oceania Champs on the Gold Coast on March 1."
Greer's next big race is part of a build-up to the Gold Coast race - the national sprint championships in Kinloch on February 8.
The Whangarei 22-year-old was awarded a Prime Minister's Scholarship late last year, allowing him to dedicate more time to training this year. He is now studying at Massey University both part-time and extramurally.
