Builder Lee Greer won the annual Whangarei Triathlon at Marsden Cove yesterday after holding off a strong finish from Olympic bound New Zealand representative Samantha Warriner.
Greer made a strong start to the Olympic distance event (1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run) emerging the clear leader at the first transition and opening up a four-minute lead on the cycle.
Warriner then tried unsuccessfully to run Greer down on the final leg. Greer won with Warriner second 1m 38s back.
It was an ideal hitout for Greer and Warriner who are both lining up at the New Zealand Triathlon championships in Wellington next. After that the two are set to team up for the rest of the triathlon season with Greer to act as Warriner's training partner and travel with her to Europe.
The event yesterday attracted about 50 competitors in three divisions. Full results will be published on Wednesday.
