Although club and school netball has finished, Whangarei Girls' High School's Sian Telfer is as busy as ever with the Perry Foundation National Netball Championships approaching, not to mention exams.
The talented wing defence/centre was originally selected for Netball North's division one 16-player squad for the national championships alongside Northern Mystics' Vilimaina Davu and Silver Fern Temepara George.
It was a huge achievement and honour to make the squad but unfortunately Telfer had to withdraw from the top team and instead she will play for Netball North's division two side at the championships later this month.
"The division one team trains four times during the day every week in Auckland and I had commitment issues," she explained.
"I couldn't make training during the day because of school," the year 12 student said.
Telfer will lineup alongside fellow premier grade team mate Luana Beazley-Tango and Kerikeri's Julie Flintoff at the championships at Stadium Southland from September 28 to October 3. The division two side will play a week-long tournament at Invercargill, while the top grade teams play a weekly competition culminating in finals at Stadium Southland which will coincide with the second division tournament.
Already 2009 has been an outstanding year for Telfer. Most recently, the WGHS premier grade team she captained came third in the Whangarei club premiership and 13th at the Upper North Island Secondary Schools tournament.
Telfer was also named as the non-travelling reserve for the Tall Ferns basketball team recently - the other sport she juggles her time around and excels at.
The athlete is hoping to cap her successful sporting year off by making the New Zealand under-21 netball team to be named at after the national championships.
"Making the team is definitely a goal for me," she said.
Telfer's still on a roll for 2009
