A large crowd turned out in "anything tartan" for the Tartan at the Races day at Ruakaka on Saturday.
The theme was built around the celebrations held at Waipu each year which starts on July 1 with International Tartan Day.
Haggis tasting and Whisky tasting complemented the horse racing and a display of highland dancing complete with bagpipes added to the entertainment.
It was an outstanding day for Ruakaka trainers Donna and Dean Logan, whose team were never out of the stake money bringing home four winners for the day with multiple placings throughout every other race.
Probably the standout winner for the team was Uncle Shayne, who stormed home for a 4-length victory. Uncle Shayne is owned in partnership by the Logans, Garry Hannam, Wayne Peters and Whangarei Racing Club committeeman Shayne Heape.
The other local highlight of the day was the win of Govind, who is part-owned and trained by Ricky Wells of Waipu.
On course turnovers ran fairly well to budget but the weather was disappointing - after forecasting a warm sunny day the day was hampered by cold and showers.
The next meeting for the Whangarei Racing Club is the July 16 race day which will see the running of the Whangarei Cup.
