Fabio Saparelli was crowned Northland's best secondary school table tennis player ahead of schoolmate Jason Booth in an all Huanui College final yesterday.
The 15-year-old's win means he defends his title from last year as he overcame New Zealand's 119th ranked player in the final 4-2. Saparelli is ranked 109th in the country.
But, that wasn't where it ended for Saparelli and Booth. The duo went on to form a team with fellow Huanui College student Shintaro Fushida-Hardy and cruise to victory over Whangarei Boys' High School 3-nil. Boys' High's team was made up of Tony Lim, Chris Kokich, Robbie Smith.
Yesterday's competition at Whangarei's Table Tennis followed the secondary schools' novice competition two weeks ago, which saw 60-90 students hit the Kensington courts.
"Numbers are down as we've lost a pile [of players] to exams," organiser Dave Scott said of the 19 players taking part.
