Isaia Toeava was a touch of class in the Blues' backline that sunk the Lions last week and Blues fans are expecting him to deliver again tonight to deflect the challenge of the Highlanders.
Toeava, with 20 test caps to his name, has been shunted all around the Blues backline this season but after a superlative game last week, it looks as though he has made the second five-eighth position his to own.
"I probably enjoy centre the most, but as long as I'm on the field, I'm pretty happy," the 23-year-old said.
"There's been a lot of shuffling around to cover injuries but we've also got a lot of good players up here so we've got to make the most of our opportunities and try and complete the mission," he said.
The Auckland Marist player known as "Ice" to his teammates said the mission remains the same even though the personnel may be constantly changing.
Last weekend Toeava was helped by some great service from Tasesa Lavea with the pair combining to create space outside them, helping fullback Paul Williams to come into the line and capitalise on their efforts.
With Lavea injured again, he will once again form an inside back combination with Jimmy Goperth, who will probably take over the place kicking duties - something that Toeava handling pretty well last week.
"It was good to have Tasesa back but I think he must be a bit soft, he keeps breaking down ... the boys listen to Jimmy because they know he's got a lot of experience and can control the game well," he said.
The Highlanders pose a serious threat to the Blues and Toeava knows it.
"They'll be real tough, we've really got a lot to do in the forward pack, their loosies are pretty hard on the ball but we're looking to get quick ball like we did last week," he said.
History favours the Blues. The two sides have played each other 14 times, including the 1998 semi-final which the Blues won.
The Blues have won nine of the matches, including last year's 40-15 trouncing, but the Southerners are just two points behind the Blues on the table and are targeting a rare win at Eden Park.
"Their backline has been pretty good as well this year, especially their 10 (Mathew Berquist) and 12 (Bowden), with a lot of their plays involving Daniel Bowden so we'll have to look after that," he said.
Toeava said two wins in a row was what the team needed to bring some momentum back into their season.
"We lost two games in a row before the bye and that affected our confidence a bit but now we've got the chance to get our season back on track this weekend."
