Northland had mixed results at the New Zealand Maori Golf Association Under-19 Championships played in stormy conditions.
The 17-strong golfing contingent, aged between 13 and 17, were forced to leave the Te Awamutu Golf Course on Tuesday during the practice round, as high winds caused trees and debris to fall on to the course.
During the next three days, they battled high winds and, despite the difficult playing conditions, experienced some success.
Ngunguru and Whangarei Golf Club member Leesa Paenga won the nett overall in the girls' division, while her teammate, Samantha Kruse of Rawene, claimed the overall Stableford win.
Ethan O'Shea hit the best gross score in division two, while the best Northland performer in division one was Kadin Neho, who finished fourth overall (gross). Golf Northland development manager Bronwyn Winter said the team also collected runner-up prizes across the girls division and the three boys' divisions.
Neho and Sean Masters contested the under-19 championships after a week competing at the Lion Foundation New Zealand Amateur Championships in Christchurch.
Local boy Compton Tikari took out the division one boys' title, while Waikato's Kelly Nicholas won the girls' division.
"There was a pretty high standard played at the tournament especially because we were playing in such stormy conditions," Winter said.
"The results in the boys' first division was a bit disappointing but the overall result at the tournament was okay. Our girls and the boys playing in the second division did particularly well."
