The 2007 Whangarei squash season had its last competitive gasp on Saturday with a social doubles tournament billed as a fun end to the season.
Ari Welsh and Mike Hebditch finally won the round robin competition, beating Alan Bee and Willie Halbert in the crucial game of the round in the 12-team competition.
Club administrator Peter Gearing said doubles - although it can look pretty crowded on courts - is no longer a rarity.
"Doubles is becoming a more popular form of the game, and we're planning to hold a few more tournaments next year," he said.
"It's probably because it's a bit more social but like a lot of sport it's more mature people who are playing these days, whereas younger people aren't really bothered - doubles is less strenuous and more fun."
For many of the club's players as well it was an opportunity to play for the first time on the recently renovated courts. Although work has still to be finished, the club now has four glass-back courts, and three new courts added in the recent project.
The club will get the chance to show off its new courts to the rest of the country when it hosts the B Grade nationals in September.
