The 2012 B grade and below squash tournament was played at Kamo over the weekend, alongside the Ivan Pohe Memorial Doubles tournament.

Ninety players from as far as the Bay of Plenty and Kaitaia competed in the singles, and 40 pairs in the doubles.

The Ivan Pohe Memorial Doubles trophy was presented by Ivan's sister Donna, to Whangarei club players Mike Hebditch and Max Trimble, Mike having won the trophy last year with partner Devon Cameron.

The Saturday night doubles final went to the wire, with a 15-14 final game score.

Beaten finalists were the only mixed doubles pairing in the top division, Sacha Pou-Tito and Paul Sykes.

Pou-Tito reigned supreme in the second division, teaming up with Miranda Harrison to overcome husband-and-wife team Elisha and Bruce Smith.

The Ladies Only final proved to be very closely fought, with Maungaturoto combination Caitlin Foster and Tracey James overcoming locals Sheryll Edlington and Cheryl Baker. Bondi Cotton and Robbie Burkhardt won the mixed division.

It was almost two in a row for last year's 'Strictly Social' winners, Kamo Stalwarts Tina (Finlayson) Jones and Mel Matheson who have teamed up each year since the tournament began in 2004. But they were pipped at the post by the pairing of Steve Watene and Annie Greene.

Watene was in a winning frame of mind, also taking out the 'Quite Serious' division, with Whangarei clubmate Aaron Cooze.

Some inventive playing uniforms added interest, with rugby players, boxers, ballerinas, vice-versa school uniforms, and bearded, hairy-legged "females" taking the court.

In the men's singles, a mix of youth, experience and style, and the inclusion of top Northland female player Sacha Pou-Tito, created interest.

Sure enough, the seedings were upset in the first round, with second seed Max Trimble outlasted by coach Jared Gravatt in a five set battle late into the night on Thursday.

Gravatt continued his good form overcoming last year's beaten finalist Bruce Clay from Kaitaia, before the tough path to the final saw him succumbing in three sets to top-seeded Kamo player Bruce Smith.

A strong ladies' first division meant top seeded Kamo player Fiona Moselen had a tough four set semi-final battle to overcome the superfit and ever-improving Miranda Harrison to reach the final.

Defending champion and New Zealand World Junior Squad member Jacinta Matson looked set to be a comfortable victor after a convincing first game, before Moselen took up the challenge and an even battle ensued. Consistency paid off, however, with Matson clinching the match 15-13 in the fifth set.

With fourteen divisions all closely fought, finals day, remarkably, ran only a little over time. One marathon game was the Ladies' fourth division final, won by Margaret McKenzie over Manaia's Delwyn Houlihan 16-14 in the fifth set. Another was the Men's division five final between tournament first-timer Shane Hohaia from Kamo, and Whangarei's James Elliot - Elliot winning in another long five set match and promoting himself to fourth place in the Northland Black Knight player series in the process.

Mackenzie Johnson avenged her loss to Mirna Manuel at the Maungaturoto Open a month ago, in winning the Ladies' division three final.

A Kaitaia contingent carried off a good number of prizes - with Ngature Stevens (Mens' division four), Daniel Clay (Mens' division six), Nirelle McDonald (Ladies division two), Camryn Stewart (Ladies' division six), and Brydee Harrison (Ladies' division seven) flying the flag high as division winners.

Other winners were Wellsford's Darren Gibbons (Mens' division two); Kamo players Gary Traill (Mens' division three), and Brad Moselen (Mens' division seven); and Maungaturoto's Emma Ihaka (Ladies' division five).
