Gilmore Brown Springfield A scored the round two upset win when they defeated ChillTech Old Girls 2-1 at Rosvall ITM Stadium.
The "scrappy" early season win even surprised Springfield coach Angeline Waetford.
"I was definitely not expecting it," she said. "Old Girls are the team to beat in the premier women's competition this year - again - they are just so well-drilled."
Both teams played well defensively, with Waetford switching players around to try and tie up Black Stick Laura Douglas, who was dangerous in space. But it was Springfield's Jade McLeod who scored first, 20 minutes into the first half, off a penalty corner.
Shortly after their initial goal, Jodie Nichol pounced on a loose ball in the circle and executed a reverse shot to Nikki Wilson, who was standing by the post and tapped it in.
Springfield continued to defend well throughout the game but they could not stop Douglas from finding the back of the goal from a straight strike during a penalty corner early in the second half.
Meanwhile, Hikurangi narrowly beat Kamo High School, 1-0, while Maungakaramea were too strong for Whangarei Girls' High School, beating them by seven goals.
In the men's premier division, Bream Bay United had a satisfying 6-1 victory over Dempster and Hill Electrical Maungakaramea, giving them an early lead in the competition. In the other men's game, Mangapai defeated Currie Electrical Springfield 3-2, after leading 3-0 at halftime.
