More than 1500 children from 18 schools around the Whangarei district took part in a successful 2010 WPSSA Intermediate Winter Sports Day at Kensington Sports Park.
Students participated in 20-minute games across seven sports, which included basketball, rugby, rugby league, rippa rugby, netball, hockey and soccer. The games took place at the park, ASB Leisure Centre, Kensington Netball Centre and Northland Hockey Stadium.
Fourteen second-year students on NorthTec's Diploma in Sport and Recreation organised the event with 30 first-year students from the diploma providing volunteer support on the day. The event was also supported by the Northland Rugby Union, Kamo High School and Whangarei Girls' High School, which provided referees for the event which aimed to provide a fun opportunity for Year Seven and Eight students to learn about and take part in sport.
NorthTec sport and recreation tutor Bobby Newport said he was pleased with the way that the event had gone. "We're really happy with the way that the day came together and would like to thank everyone for the support that they have given us."
