North Force soccer coach Dean Wheatley's astonished face said it all after watching his side suffer their second defeat in two days.
"I've seen things in football this weekend I have never seen," he said.
The North Force Men's match against Albany United at Tikipunga Park yesterday had taken on extra significance for the team after they stumbled in round three of the US1 Premier League against Forrest Hill.
The Northland side went down 4-2, having led for most of the game until things turned pear-shaped and Forrest Hill took charge of the match.
Yesterday was just as frustrating for the coach and his side, up against an Albany outfit who had plenty to prove, not unlike their northern counterparts.
The two teams were nestled close together at seventh and eighth position on the table heading into round four, and most of yesterday's game suggested the two teams were very evenly matched.
North Force's Calvin Erick scored the first goal, which was promptly equalled by Albany and, with a halftime score of 1-1, it was anyone's game.
North Force tried to extend the lead with a goal from Sammy Oso and Steve Schimmel, but Albany responded swiftly, taking advantage of the home team's depleted defensive troops.
Tikipunga coach/player Mauro Donoso stepped up to the North Force side, only to be yellow-carded for tripping a player in the second stanza when things started getting heated, with both teams trying to find the edge.
Albany saw their chance when their goal was left open and took the lead for the first time with about 20 minutes remaining - and once again, things turned hairy.
The visitors were pulled up on a passback to their goalkeeper, and North Force were awarded an indirect free kick.
Steve Schimmel took the kick but it was disallowed after it did not make contact with anyone.
Tensions were high but North Force regained composure and Oso found the back of the net, tying up the game once more. A minute later, the reply came. Albany regained the lead and held on, winning 5-4.
"A coach's nightmare really," Wheatley said about the match, and the weekend as a whole.
"We were down players - Kyle Mac to injury, Matthew Ward and Mike Crowley who is serving a two-match suspension after being sent off in the first round.
"But that is no excuse - we had chances to bury them, but we kept letting them back in.
"Now we have to get ourselves up for a trip to Glenfield in two weeks."
The result has left North Force in eighth spot on the table, while Albany have moved into fifth position.
After a bye next week, North Force will be tested by a strong Glenfield side in round six.
