When they were 0-3 down at half-time at Warkworth on Saturday, Kamo's Federation Cup campaign looked doomed _ until coach Russell Baddeley pulled out the ultimate threat from the coaching manual.
He told the team he would ban alcohol on the bus home from Warkworth if Kamo didn't win.
That threat - plus a timely formation change - had the desired effect on his players.
Baddeley moved a third striker forward after half-time, deviating from the 4-4-2 formation played in the first half, and the tactic paid off almost immediately.
Steve Schimmel scored in the fifth and the eighth minute to get his back in the game. Three more goals in the final 10 minutes of the spell to Sammy Oso, David Healey and Keegan Baddeley, without reply from a demoralised Warkworth, netted the team a 5-3 win at Shoesmith Park and entry into the third round of the competition.
The coach castigated his defence for some unseemly errors in the first spell but it was more likely the lack of recent match practice with two weeks off due to close grounds, followed by a 15-2 win last week, that led to Kamo's overconfidence and their half-time plight.
In Saturday's other Federation Cup action involving Northland teams, Tikipunga went down to East Coast Bays 2-5 after being on level terms at half-time.
A goal to Marcus Mulhearn in the first spell saw Tikipunga in contention at the break but two quick goals gave East Coast Bays a good start to the second spell. North Force goalkeeper Leon Taylor, playing in the outfield, scored next to edge the visitors back into contention.
Tikipunga appealed for another goal - the result of a goalmouth scramble - but it was disallowed by the referee and then the home side finished the game off with two late goals.
North Force Reserves also were knocked out of their cup competition, going down 2-4 to Forrest Hill after dominating the match early on. The reserves allowed themselves to be put off their game by a physical Forrest Hill side and they went into their shell slightly, conceding goals.
In Northland premier league action, a late goal to Madhatters sank FC Whangarei's hopes of a win after they led 2-1 midway through the spell. FC were unlucky to lose North Force player Adam Sharpe, sent off for dissent shortly afterwards, and they conceded two goals to go down 3-2.
The other scheduled premier league match between Kerikeri and Central Brown was postponed.
