The need for speed keeps Whangarei speedway driver Anita Sloot interested in the sport she took up six years ago.
"I just want to keep going faster and faster. The smell of the fumes and noise of the motors really gets the adrenalin going," she said.
Sloot, who began racing with the Whangarei Stock and Saloon Car Club after some encouragement from her partner, plans on a strong finish at the final club meeting for the 2009/2010 season.
But the Whangarei driver faces a stern challenge as about 17 limited saloons have been confirmed to be racing, including four drivers with a top 10 national ranking.
"Scott Lansdowne, who drives for Waikaraka but lives in Puhoi is coming, along with Roy Walker, who is from Taipa but also drives for Waikaraka. Phil Towgood from Whitianga and Whangarei's Aaron Tonks are also racing, so there will be stiff competition in what is a large field for one of our club meetings," she said.
Along with the limited saloons, who will be competing for $2000 prize money, more than 20 stock cars will be racing in what is the largest field at a Whangarei Club meet for many years.
Fifteen ministocks, 10 ATV bikes, super saloon and over 20 C and B-grade cars will also be in action on Saturday.
"What started out as a normal club day became huge when people kept ringing, wanting to come up and race, so we combined it all into one big meet," Sloot said.
Racing gets underway on Saturday, from 12pm, at the club's track on Lower Port Rd. Spectators are welcome.
