Sevens rugby hits Whangarei this weekend, with the second of four selection tournaments to be held at Old Boys Rugby Club.
This season sees a revised selection process for Northland sevens rugby, with Northland coach Peter Nock choosing players for the provincial representative squad based on their performances at the four regional tournaments - held last Saturday in Kaitaia, Old Boys tomorrow, at Wellsford on November 12, and at Moerewa on November 19.
The squad selected after the tournaments will be honed to a playing side ahead of the New Zealand National Rugby Sevens Tournament in Queenstown in January.
Last weekend saw the first of the tournaments being staged, at Arnold Rae Park in Kaitaia. Host side Muriwhenua narrowly claimed the winner's glory on a countback over Moerewa, 14-12.
Tomorrow's tournament in Whangarei will see 15 teams attending, including Muriwhenua who join Kamo, Otamatea and Mangakahia in Pool D. In Pool C, Marist, Waipu, Western Sharks and Moerewa will battle it out, while Pool B sees Mid Western, Old Boys, Kerikeri and Dargaville Old Boys go up against each other. Three teams in Pool A - Hikurangi, Hora Hora and Wellsford - round off the competition.
