Whangarei Boys High School skipper Ben Hyde led the way for his team scoring 156 not out in round one of the Mark Cromie Holden Premier one-day cricket competition at Kensington Park.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Hyde kept his composure at the crease on Saturday to help the schoolboys set a hefty 261-run target for Kamo.
"It felt pretty good, it's my first premier grade 100 so I'm pretty happy to have achieved that today," he said.
After scoring boundaries early on, the second 50 of his century was largely achieved with singles and twos as Kamo fought back with the ball.
"They put the field back quite well and that slowed the scoring in the middle there, and we lost a few wickets, so I just tried to knock it around and get through to the end because you can score a lot in the last 10 overs," Hyde said.
Batting at No3, the skipper put together a strong 93-run partnership with opener Bradley Kneebone (25), followed by a 73-run stint with No8 Tom Herman (21) and finally a 25-run partnership with lower-order batsman Alex Seymour (3).
Three of the schoolboys were run out, while Kamo's bowlers shared the wickets. Aaron McIntosh took two wickets for 20, Eden Crawford claimed 2-25 and Logan Miller grabbed one.
Following Kamo opening batsman Jamie Millar's dismissal for two runs, Dean Williams (30) and Curtis Cherrington (62) steadied the batting.
But after their exit the schoolboys dismissed the middle and lower order for single figures with the exception of tailender Sam Currie who made 16. Kamo were dismissed for 166, 95 runs short of their target. David Armitt was the best bowler, taking 3-10.
A soft, damp wicket delayed the start of play at Kaipara Flats in the one-day match between the hosts and Maungakaramea as the groundsman tried to press some of the moisture out of the wicket.
After winning the toss, Maungakaramea sent Kaipara into bat and their bowlers did not fare too badly. James Merry collected 3-22.
Raymond Beamish was the best of Kaipara's batsmen, hitting 37 as they reached 151 all out, while Matthew Taylor and Mark Dellow both hit 22.
Maungakaramea struggled with the bat, with top-order batsmen Mark Southee (6) and Harry Taffs (3) run out during the first 12 overs. Despite attempts to kick-start the scoring from Jason Morgan (27), Joe Gunson (19) and James Merry (22 not out), Kaipara dismissed the visitors for 111, in just 37.2 overs.
Meanwhile, Onerahi Central were happy to get a win, defeating City by 94 runs.
Double figures from the top and middle-order batsmen helped Onerahi Central make 219-6 which they backed up with a top bowling performance.
After hitting a handy 43, Josh Matthews took an impressive 5-22 in 8.2 overs. Onerahi Central had the depleted City side all out for 135 after 42.2 overs.
The final round of the Lion Red Premier one-day competition will be played next Saturday, where teams will be boosted with the return of their Northland representatives.
