Northland's six area schools are thrilled Government funding for an annual school sports tournament has been reinstated.
Sport and Recreation New Zealand had pulled the plug on $12,500 of funding for area schools to travel to their annual tournament.
The Area Schools Association runs the tournament for over 30 rural schools around the country and has previously relied on funding from SPARC's Sport Fit programme.
Opononi Area School principal Tiere Maoate said without the funding, the school would not be able to send some of its top athletes to the competition, as funding would become too difficult.
SPARC had already committed $12,500 as travel support for this year's Area Schools Association tournament in Whangarei, to be held from 6 to 10 July 2008.
