By Peter Thorley A GREAT spell of bowling by Tauseef Satti ripped the middle order out of the Whangarei Boys' High School batting line-up to leave Kaipara Flats handily placed in their two-day match on Saturday.
Satti took four wickets for 18 off 15 overs, claiming thewickets of Josh Matthews (15) and Jamie Lee (5) before sending Vishan Harypursat and Ben Hyde back to the pavillion without scoring.
"They had a really slow start because it was the first time we used the grass track this season, it was consistant but it was slow and low, and I think it was more frustration on the batsmen's part (that caused the wickets to fall)," Satti said.
Boys High's Henry Cooper top-scored with 19 runs as the students were bundled out for a meagre 89 in 56 overs.
Brad Wilson made the most of his bowlers' good work by scoring an unbeaten 77 as Kaipara compiled 133/3, a lead of 44 to put them in the box seat in the match in the 39 overs before stumps.
Wilson began his innings cautiously before cutting loose, scoring two sixes and several fours in the final few overs. The second division one match was a less one-sided affair at Maungakaramea, with first innings points still very much in the balance.
City won the toss and put their hosts into bat with Joey Yovich and Parry Spick claiming early wickets. Mark Southee (26) and Craig Gurr (34) knuckled down to graft out some runs but the side was dismissed for 179 in 62 overs.
At stumps City were 122/4 and had edged themselves into a good position thanks to contributions from Bert Horner (36), Yovich (29) and Owain Hopkins (38no).
Both division two matches in the Whangarei club competition were close to completion after some fairly shaky batting at Kensington Park.
Kamo were the exception, after winning the toss they batted first against Whangarei Boys' High School's second XI, scoring 319/9 in their 65 overs.
Qasim Shiekh top scored with a fantastic innings of 135, including 12 fours and one six. He combined with Northland opener Rhys Farrand (94), to record a partnership of 192 for the second wicket.
Farrand, like Shiekh, was dismissed trying to push the scoring along toward the end of the innings. Their dismissal brought Ian Page to the wicket in his first match back since injuring his knee at the beginning of the season. Page showed he won't take too long to regain his form as he smashed 67 off the boy's high bowlers at better than a run a ball.
Louis Treiber took five wickets for 83 off 17 overs, while adult player and Northland selector Ross Kneebone took three wickets.
In reply, Boys High were dismissed for just 49, with Kneebone top-scoring with 31.
Jamie Kay's pace wreaked havoc in the Boys High ranks and he returned figures of 6/15 off nine overs. Forced to follow on High School were once again in trouble at stumps at 40/8, with Kneebone and Treiber together at the crease.
Onerahi-Central will have to work a little harder than Kamo for maximum points in their match but they also have the upper hand against Bledisloe after Saturday's play. Hitash Patel top-scored for Bledisloe with 20 after the heart was ripped out of their top order by the Onerahi bowlers.
Harry Darkins was the pick of them, scoring another five wicket bag as he took 6/20 from 10 overs, as Bledisloe were dismissed for 63.
Geoff Bigwood matched Patel's total to top score for Onerahi as they passed Bledisloe's total to score 105 in their turn at bat. Andy Thompson (4/25) and James Welsh (3/24) did most of the damage for Bledisloe.
The Bay of Islands team were at 78/5 at stumps and still retain a chance of winning as long as their professional Peter Morgan stays at the wicket. He is currently 58 not out.
