There's solidarity in sailing circles and one established Onerahi Yacht Club sailor has offered to help out one of the club's rising stars.
Auckland based Mike Sanderson has been there and done that. In 2006, he was awarded the ISAF World Sailor of the year after he skippered ABN Ambro to his second win in the Round the World Yacht race.
Sanderson has generously offered his time to help raise money for clubmate Michael Cate as he prepares to attend the ISAF Youth Worlds in Croatia in July.
Cate follows that campaign up by competing at the U-21 Laser Standard Worlds and Laser Radial Youth Worlds in La Rochelle, France and it won't be a cheap trip.
Sanderson will be the keynote speaker at a fundraising evening at the Onerahi Yacht Club on April 29.
Cate arrived back from the United Kingdom, where he competed at the British Youth Nationals at Hayling Island on the south coast, on Monday.
A fleet of 108 competed in the Laser Radial fleet, and Cate sailed well in very cold conditions to finish third after five days of competition.
There were only five points separating the top three sailors with a further five points back to fourth place.
Sanderson backs Onerahi's new hope
