Sam Warriner takes out low key event

Sam Warriner took out a triathlon competition named after her at Bream Bay yesterday.

The Sam Warriner Triathlon attracted about 25 competitors in all three categories, olympic, sprint and beginners.

Whangarei Triathlon Club president Mike Gowing said the competition started four years ago as a legacy to Ms Warriner but this year's event had been low-key.

"Normally we'd have it as part of our fundraiser but this year we just didn't have time plus Sam was racing in Australia and I was racing in Auckland."

But he said next year's event would be a big one.

This year, he said it was encouraging to see a couple of newcomers who raced with Ms Warriner and had photos taken with her.

It was Ms Warriner's first win.

Mr Gowing said people enjoyed the races at a great venue, with less traffic and good weather conditions.
