Black Sticks' coach Mark Hager has retained the same 18-strong squad who recently won the Oceania Cup at Invercargill, with the addition of Northland's Sam Harrison, for the upcoming Champions' Challenge tournament.
After making her debut against Argentina and China in July, Harrison, 18, joins her elder sister, Charlotte, along with Anna Thorpe, Ella Gunson and Stacey Michelsen - all from Northland - for the tournament in Cape Town, South Africa, from October 11-18.
Featuring teams including Azerbaijan, Chile, Italy, Japan, Korea, Spain, South Africa and the Kiwis - ranked 11th in the world - the Champions' Challenge will be highly competitive, especially as the tournament winner gains entry to the Champions' Trophy, contested by the top six teams in the world.
Hager saw the Champions' Challenge as a good opportunity for his relatively inexperienced squad to continue increasing their confidence.
"We have a lot of work to do to compete with the top six teams in the world but we are heading in the right direction," he said.
The Kiwis showed huge grit when they defeated the fifth-ranked Australians in the final of the Oceania Cup last week, successfully defending their title.
It was satisfying victory for the Black Sticks, up against the Australian contingent who only narrowly lost to Argentina to finish second in the Champions' Trophy in Sydney during July.
On their arrival in South Africa, the Kiwis will play three build-up matches against the hosts who are ranked 12th just below NZ, at Stellenbosch, Cape Town, before the tournament gets under way. However, before the Champions' Challenge, all the squad will contest the National Hockey League with their respective regional teams.
Champions Challenge Black Sticks Women's Team: Kayla Sharland, Emily Naylor, Krystal Forgesson, Kate Saunders, Katie Glynn, Stacey Carr, Ella Gunson, Beth Jurgeleit, Clarissa Eshuis, Lucy Talbot, Stacey Brannigan, Sam Harrison, Gemma Flynn, Anna Thorpe, Kate Mahon, Charlotte Harrison, Bianca Russell, Stacey Michelsen, Anita Punt.
