Running: Entries for Cape Brett Challenge are open

Entries are open for Northland's toughest running event, the Cape Brett Challenge, in April.

The re-established trail race set for Anzac weekend, April 26, and based at Rawhiti in the Bay of Islands, was a popular drawcard this year, attracting a record number of competitors.

Almost 400 runners and walkers took part across three event options.

Among those who competed last April was Vajin Armstrong, one of New Zealand's top trail runners and a three times winner and Kepler Trail record holder.

Vajin smashed the Cape Brett long 40km course record by completing the route in 4h 10m, which event director Jan Danilo described as a "truly superhuman achievement".

The Shane Witihera Memorial trophy will again be up for grabs for the first competitor from the local community to finish.

Danilo said most sponsors were also returning while overall naming rights, as well as those for the classic 40km and Kauri Ridge options, remained available along with various other opportunities.

The classic 40km route is limited to 100 competitors and the early entries include a couple making the trip from the US.
