Rugby League: Rivals in must win clash

The match between Northern Wairoa and Takahiwai in Dargaville takes centre stage in the Whangarei and Districts Rugby League on Saturday.

Both are well-placed to make the play-offs, in fourth and fifth place respectively, but neither can afford a loss, with the pressure on them likely to provide a spectacular contest.

Leaders and defending champions Hikurangi face a tough test away at Otaua but, like Moerewa in second place, have already booked their semifinal spot.

Moerewa can still miss out on second place, however, and so won't be taking Marist's challenge lightly when the Whangarei side visit Simson Park.

With just three rounds to go after this week's games, there are a number of important encounters as the race for the two remaining playoff places intensifies.

Hokianga, in third place, face a tough encounter at home against the improving Bay Slayers, with the two teams looking to continue their fierce rivalry.

The Muriwhenua Falcons have to bounce back from last week's loss to Hikurangi if they want to maintain their play-off hopes. The Falcons are in sixth place and a slip-up against City in Kaitaia could mean curtains to their title chances.

The final match of the round is in Kaikohe between cellar-dwellers Hora Hora and Kaikohe. Both sides have had a tough second round and will be eyeing the opportunity to notch a rare win.
