Young Connor Brown picked a great time to open his account for North Force.
The young midfielder made the most of his starting debut in the senior side against league leaders Glenfield Rovers by slotting home the second goal to earn his side an upset 2-1 win.
The team deserved their two goal buffer, 15 minutes into the second spell, after player-coach Scott Burgess put them into the lead midway through the first spell.
North Force had outplayed their opposition up until that point but when they lost midfield supremo Steve Schimmel with a suspected groin tear, some re-organisation was forced onto the side.
Before they could compensate for his absence North Force received due warning of Rovers' attacking potential by conceding an unstoppable strike midway through the spell. Good passing earned the visitors some space on the right flank and when the ball was half cleared the Glenfield player smacked in a long-range effort.
Burgess said the goal meant reining in his team for the final 20 minutes and grinding out a valuable win.
"Connor made his mark with a good finish on the back post and that gave the boys the lift we needed to carry on and win," he said.
He said the defence was outstanding throughout - a far cry from the opening two rounds where North Force conceded nine goals. Jeremy Rintoul may have found his place for the season partnering Aaron Taylor in central defence.
Cody Lacour also played out of position at left back and excelled in the unusual position, with Sam Rout also good.
"Cody was outstanding and we gave him player of the day for his work there and hopefully that now means we've addressed our defensive failings from the first two weeks," the coach said.
Burgess said the team's first half performance was one of the best he'd ever seen the club put together.
"In the end 1-0 was flattering to them, we hit the post and might have scored three or four more," he said.
The Glenfield coach admitted his players had badly under-estimated their opposition.
In the Northland Premier League, Kamo beat off the challenge of Tikipunga in the second spell to remain unbeaten in the competition. Jacob Manaton scored off a corner late in the first spell which saw Tikipunga dominate the second spell but they were unable to breach the solid defence put up by Kamo.
Onerahi and Kamo remain on track for a showdown after Onerahi also kept their unbeaten record by beating Kerikeri 1-0, with FC Whangarei defeating Bream Bay 2-0 in the other match.
